To repurpose this material, a team of UNAM researchers, led by Miriam Est\u00e9vez Gonz\u00e1lez, has developed <em data-start=\"476\" data-end=\"488\">Sargapanel<\/em>, an innovative construction panel made from gypsum and dried sargassum.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"562\" data-end=\"827\">The project aims to provide a large-scale, sustainable solution to mitigate the environmental impact of this macroalgae. Each panel incorporates up to 60 kilograms of wet sargassum, promoting a circular economy using recyclable and non-toxic materials.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"829\" data-end=\"1050\">Beyond its ecological benefits, <em data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"873\">Sargapanel<\/em> stands out for its durability, thermal insulation properties, and fire-retardant capabilities, making it an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative for construction.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1052\" data-end=\"1557\">As part of their efforts, the research team from the <em>Center for Applied Physics and Advanced Technology<\/em> participated in the <em>First BBVA National Sustainability Challenge 2023 &#8220;Together for the Mexican Caribbean&#8221;<\/em>. In November 2024, their project was selected as one of the winning proposals in a competition organized by the <em>UNAM-TEC Consortium<\/em>\u2014comprising UNAM, through the <em>Technology Transfer Unit (CVTT)<\/em>, and the <em>Monterrey Institute of Technology<\/em>\u2014in collaboration with BBVA Mexico.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1787\">In just one year, the team has developed an initiative that addresses a significant environmental challenge, and they plan to continue advancing the project.
