UNAM Hosts 46th International Nuclear Physics Symposium
“Mexico has established itself as a leader in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics,” said Daniel José Marin Lámbarri, a researcher at UNAM’s Institute of Physics (IF), during the 46th Symposium on Nuclear Physics.
The conference, held in Cocoyoc, Morelos, in mid-January, gathered 90 participants, including 37 international scientists from 15 countries. Discussions covered key topics such as nuclear astrophysics, nuclear reactions, hadronic physics, radioactive beams, applied nuclear physics, and advanced instrumentation.
The event showcased research from leading Mexican institutions, including UNAM’s Institute of Physics (IF), UNAM’s Nuclear Sciences Institute (ICN), the National Nuclear Research Institute (ININ), and Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México. Presentations ranged from doctoral research to large-scale projects, reflecting Mexico’s growing influence in nuclear physics.
With financial support from IF and ICN, the symposium awarded scholarships to 40 undergraduate and graduate students. Marin Lámbarri emphasized the impact of these scholarships, which covered registration, accommodation, and travel expenses. “This provides students with a unique opportunity to engage with national and international experts, broadening their perspectives and deepening their commitment to nuclear physics,” he noted.
He also highlighted recent advancements in nuclear instrumentation. “Enhanced detector capabilities now enable more precise measurements, potentially revealing previously unobservable phenomena,” he explained. He added that the international scientific community has shown increasing interest in strengthening collaborations with Mexico to advance research with global impact.
