Combating Disinformation, Key to Democracy: Susannah Goshko
The Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (FCPyS) at UNAM hosted the conference “Beyond the Noise: Strategies Against Disinformation.”
During the event, Susannah Goshko, the British Ambassador to Mexico, warned that disinformation poses a greater threat than ever before. In an era defined by widespread internet use, the rapid spread of content on social media, and the rise of generative artificial intelligence capable of creating convincing images, videos, and audio, it is crucial to have tools that help differentiate truth from falsehood.
Goshko emphasized that addressing disinformation is essential for the United Kingdom to protect democracy, national security, and economic prosperity, especially given its global impact. She made these comments before Alejandro Chanona Burguete, Director of FCPyS.
During the academic session, Dr. Chanona highlighted that disinformation affects political, economic, social, cultural, and security spheres. He pointed out that it poses operational challenges for authorities and warned that the spread of false information and fake news could lead to instability and uncertainty and contribute to increased social polarization, particularly in a world where cyberspace has become a strategic domain.
