To explore the common characteristics of sacred spaces across time and geography, the Second International Colloquium: Sacred Spaces was jointly organized by UNAM’s Chicago campus, UNAM’s Institute of Aesthetic Research, and the University of Chicago.
The event brought together twenty-one specialists from Mexico, Spain, Scotland, and the United States, fostering an enriching dialogue among art historians, archaeologists, and historians of religion.
Teresa Uriarte, a researcher from UNAM’s Institute of Aesthetic Research, delivered the keynote lecture titled “The Skin of Architecture.” In her presentation, she reflected on the role of human beings as travelers who leave fundamental traces to understanding civilization.
The colloquium’s themes ranged from representations of sacred spaces in various formats to their relationship with concepts such as death, fertility, and sacrifice. This gathering strengthened academic ties between institutions and highlighted the richness of our cultural roots and the enduring importance of the sacred in an ever-changing world.
Experts shared their knowledge, and all presentations are now available on UNAM-Chicago’s YouTube channel, extending the impact of this significant event to a broader audience.
