Susana Magallón Inducted into The Royal Society
The Royal Society, the world’s oldest scientific academy, highlighted on its website that Magallón Puebla is an evolutionary biologist focused on the processes that determine the distinctive character and diversity of flowering plants and their vast species richness.
The Royal Society represents the UK research community and collaborates with international partners to champion science and its benefits. It provides authoritative and independent advice on scientific issues that support the public good, including policies that promote scientific excellence and scientific issues that underpin public policy.
The organization emphasizes that the Mexican scientist has investigated several key areas:
- The evolution of floral form, including the reconstruction of ancestral flowers and floral morphological space across time and lineages.
- The large-scale dynamics of flowering plant diversification, including the timing of their origin and radiation, and major changes in speciation and extinction rates.
- The richness of Mesoamerican plant species, such as phylogenetic composition in different biomes and potential correlates of diversification in groups rich in emblematic species.
Magallón Puebla views her election to this international organization as recognition of her scientific career, demonstrating that UNAM conducts first-rate, original, and impactful scientific research.
