Italian Government Honors UNAM Researcher Lucia Capra

Lucia Capra, a distinguished researcher at UNAM’s Institute of Geosciences, was awarded the Order of the Star of Italy at the rank of “Cavaliere.” Italian Ambassador to Mexico, Alessandro Modiano, presented the prestigious distinction.

Conferred by the President of Italy in 1948, the award recognizes Italian citizens abroad who have made outstanding contributions to Italy’s growth and influence. Lucia came to Mexico in 1995 through an exchange program with the University of Milan, where she identified unique opportunities for volcanological research.

Capra earned her Ph.D. from UNAM’s Institute for Geophysics and completed postdoctoral work at the School of Geography. Since 2006, she has been an integral member of the Geosciences Center, advancing volcanology and natural hazard research and promoting academic exchange between Mexico and Italy. Her contributions have significantly strengthened scientific collaboration between both nations, creating valuable opportunities for students and faculty in the field of geosciences.
