GOOGLE HONORS UNAM RESEARCHERS WITH ACADEMIC AWARD
Jesús Siqueiros and Carlos Hernández, researchers at UNAM’s Institute for Applied Mathematics and Systems Research, have been honored with the 2024 Google Research Award in the Society-Centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) category.
Their award-winning project, “Community AI Weavers and Nature-Based Solutions: A Participatory AI Approach to Urban Sustainability Transformation,” explores innovative ways to address sustainability challenges through AI and community collaboration.
As a case study, the initiative focuses on improving urban mobility in Mérida, Yucatán. Specifically, the project aims to enhance bus stop accessibility and create a more inclusive and sustainable transportation system for the city.
Despite recent upgrades to its transportation infrastructure, Mérida still faces significant issues with bus stop accessibility. The city’s intense heat—often surpassing 38°C (100°F)—makes commuting difficult for residents. To tackle these problems, the researchers are assembling a collaborative team of transit users, civil society organizations, municipal authorities, and AI experts. Together, they will develop strategies for equitable and user-friendly urban mobility solutions in Mérida.
While previous studies have examined the roles of AI, sustainability, and social participation individually, this project addresses the pressing need to integrate these areas. By combining technology, community input, and sustainable practices, it aims to provide a holistic solution to the challenges of urban development.
