Global Geoparks Network Recognizes UNAM Experts
Geoparque Mixteca Alta
The Global Geoparks Network (GGN) has recognized two researchers from UNAM’s Institute of Geography, José Luis Palacio Prieto and Emmaline Montserrat Rosado González, for their outstanding contributions to the development of this UNESCO-endorsed global initiative, which celebrates two decades of promoting geoheritage and territorial sustainability.
The recognition was presented during the 7th Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Geoparks Network (GeoLAC), held in Torres, Brazil, as part of the GGN’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
José Luis Palacio has played a key role in establishing geoparks throughout Mexico, leading the development of the UNESCO Global Geopark Mixteca Alta in Oaxaca. Meanwhile, Emmaline Rosado coordinates the GeoLAC network, which unites 13 geoparks across seven Latin American countries.
Both experts have championed the recognition of regions like the Mixteca Alta and guided emerging geopark projects in Coahuila and San Luis Potosí. Their efforts have helped solidify geoparks’ role as essential tools for education, conservation, and sustainable development.
