Political Science Student to Head OAS Model in Texas

Ana Cristina Rodríguez González, a seventh-semester International Relations student at UNAM’s Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (FCPyS), has made history as the first Mexican student elected president of The Eugene Scassa Mock Organization of American States (ESMOAS). This milestone marks a significant moment in the program’s 28-year history.

ESMOAS, a simulation of the Organization of American States (OAS), brings together over 200 students from universities such as Concordia, Texas State University, and UNAM. At the most recent session, held in November 2024 at Baylor University in Texas, Rodríguez González represented Ecuador, demonstrating exceptional negotiation and debate skills in a multicultural setting. Her performance earned her the presidency for 2025.

Marco Lopátegui, an FCPyS professor and mentor to UNAM delegations, emphasized the significance of this achievement: “This recognition reflects the talent and preparation of our students, who consistently excel on the international stage.”

At just 21 years old, Rodríguez González has accumulated considerable experience in diplomatic simulations, participating in four ESMOAS sessions and mentoring future delegations. As president, she will oversee the organization of the 2025 session, including developing crisis scenarios to challenge delegates.

Regarding her appointment, Rodríguez González stated, “I embrace this challenge with pride. These opportunities foster academic growth and position Mexico as a leader in student diplomacy.”
