A Decade of LIIGH Genomic Excellence
Celebrating its tenth anniversary, UNAM’s International Laboratory for Human Genome Research (LIIGH) has established itself as a global leader in scientific innovation.
Located in Juriquilla, Querétaro, it is UNAM’s only facility exclusively dedicated to advanced research in autoimmune diseases, paleogenomics, and acral melanoma, using state-of-the-art technology.
María del Carmen Ávila Arcos, Coordinator of LIIGH, emphasized the transformative contributions of ten early-career researchers who have joined the laboratory’s team, pioneering innovative approaches in genomics. The laboratory’s success in securing highly competitive international funding has further propelled groundbreaking projects with a global impact.
Central to LIIGH’s achievements is its International Advisory Board, comprising renowned experts from world-leading institutions, including Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Jackson Laboratory, and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. This board provides strategic direction, identifies funding opportunities, and strengthens the laboratory’s global partnerships.
LIIGH also hosts the annual Horizons in Genomic Sciences International Colloquium, a prestigious forum for showcasing cutting-edge research. The colloquium fosters invaluable feedback from the Advisory Board while creating opportunities for new collaborations and access to global resources.
Over the past decade, LIIGH has become a model of excellence in genomic research, strengthening UNAM’s connection to the global scientific community. Its accomplishments have laid the groundwork for future innovation, positioning the laboratory as a key player in shaping the future of genomics worldwide.
