PROTECTING MIGRANTS: UNAM’S COMMITMENT TO HUMAN RIGHTS
UNAM President Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas urged Mexican society to unite in addressing the pressing challenges facing Mexican communities in the United States and to support governmental initiatives aimed at responding to the evolving crisis.
He underscored the need to establish robust support mechanisms for migrants who may be impacted by policies recently announced by the incoming U.S. administration.
“In the coming weeks, UNAM will launch additional initiatives to support our migrant population in the United States, both from Mexico and through our campuses in the U.S.,” Lomelí Vanegas stated.
As part of a newly signed agreement between UNAM and Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the university’s five U.S. campuses in San Antonio, Chicago, Los Angeles, Tucson, and Boston will provide comprehensive legal and psychological support services to Mexican nationals.
“Through these actions, UNAM underscores its unwavering commitment to our nation and the protection of human dignity and fundamental rights, regardless of immigration status,” he added.
This announcement was made during the University Conference on Migrant Rights, Human Dignity, and National Interest, a forum convened to address the challenges faced by Mexican communities abroad.
