International Program on Tropical Meteorology and Climatology
In collaboration with the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), UNESCO, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the Italian government, UNAM launched an academic program focused on tropical meteorology and climatology. The program emphasizes thermodynamics and atmospheric processes.
The program, organized by UNAM’s Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change (ICAyCC), convened international experts and students to advance understanding of atmospheric convection and climate change.
At the opening ceremony, ICAyCC Director Jorge Zavala Hidalgo highlighted the program’s importance for Latin American students, particularly those with limited access to advanced scientific events. He emphasized that such collaborations help make cutting-edge topics accessible to a wider audience.
ICTP Lead Organizer Adrian Tompkins reiterated the center’s commitment to advancing global science, noting the value of international collaboration and opportunities for student exchange, including visits to ICTP facilities in Italy.
The program began with a keynote lecture by Professor Simona Bordoni from the University of Trento, Italy, who discussed fundamental principles of thermodynamics in meteorology, such as the state equations for dry air and cyclic transformations.
