Artificial Intelligence for Real-World Change
At the opening of the First International Congress on Artificial Intelligence: Challenges and Opportunities, Nora del Consuelo Goris Mayans, director of UNAM’s Faculty of Higher Studies (FES) Acatlán, emphasized the need to turn artificial intelligence into tangible research, public policy proposals, and real solutions to today’s most pressing challenges. “We must generate projects with real impact,” she urged.
The event was organized by the Academic Council for the Physical-Mathematical and Engineering Sciences Area (CAACFMI), through its Computer Science Academic Program Committee.
As the host and a faculty member, Goris Mayans emphasized UNAM’s ongoing commitment to promoting the responsible, inclusive, and ultimately beneficial development of this technology.
The five-day congress, held from April 7 to 11, featured daily sessions at different UNAM venues, including FES Acatlán, the School of Engineering, the College of Science, the School of Accounting, and FES Aragón. Its goal was to showcase the latest global advances in artificial intelligence while providing a space for dialogue, reflection, and learning.
Ana María Martínez Vázquez, coordinator of CAACFMI, noted that intelligence is what defines us as a species—working with artificial intelligence, therefore, presents both an enormous challenge and a great opportunity.
