Geolodía Brings a Geological Lens to Understanding Our Planet
Mexico recently celebrated the second edition of Geolodía, an international initiative designed to make geology more accessible to the public by showcasing the value and relevance of this often-overlooked natural science.
The event, held under the theme Geology and the Challenge of Inclusion, included guided field excursions led by experts in Earth sciences and science communication.
With guidance from specialists, participants examined landscapes, soils, and rock formations to interpret Earth’s history through its geological features.
The event brought together faculty and students from several UNAM institutions, including the National School of Earth Sciences (ENCiT), the Institutes of Geophysics, Geology, Geosciences, and the College of Science. Additional collaborators included the Universidad Veracruzana, the Autonomous Universities of Hidalgo, Nuevo León, and San Luis Potosí, and the geotourism initiative Geoexplora.
According to Carles Canet, national coordinator of Geolodía in Mexico, this year’s program included 15 excursions across the country, particularly in Mexico City, Hidalgo, Querétaro, the State of Mexico, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, and Veracruz.
