Renowned Economist Mariana Mazzucato Delivers Lecture at UNAM

Mariana Mazzucato, the acclaimed Italian economist, delivered a lecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) titled “Directed Growth: Shaping the Economy, Not Merely Correcting It.”

In her presentation, she emphasized the crucial role of the state in fostering an inclusive and sustainable economy.

Mazzucato argued that this economic approach requires us to reconsider policies, institutions, and social agreements, acknowledging that we are actively shaping our future. The founding director of the Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose emphasized that capitalism is not a fixed system but rather the result of decisions made by various economic organizations, both public and private. She highlighted numerous instances where investments in both sectors have led to success.

Addressing students and specialists, Mazzucato stressed the need to set clear objectives and focus on innovation and collaboration to harness collective intelligence for problem-solving. She urged moving beyond the idea of a flawed system that only needs adjustments.

The economist also pointed out that many 20th-century advancements were made possible through state entrepreneurship and support for research in areas requiring long-term investment. As an example, she cited how the lunar mission led to innovations in camera technology, insulation systems, and water purification.

After welcoming Mazzucato, UNAM President Leonardo Lomelí emphasized the significance of the University College London scholar’s visit to support Mexico’s development, highlighting the importance of defining the roles of public and private sectors.
