OEI Recognizes UNAM for Its Commitment to Education and Development
UNAM has been awarded the Ibero-American Development Cooperation Award by the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science, and Culture (OEI). This distinction, launched as part of the OEI’s 75th-anniversary celebrations, recognizes UNAM’s dedication to quality education, internationalization, and educational inclusion.
Representing UNAM’s president, Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, at the ceremony was Francisco Suárez Güemes, General Director of Cooperation and Internationalization. The event took place at the Castalia Forum of the Mexican Culture Seminar.
During the ceremony, Mariano Jabonero, Secretary General of the OEI, emphasized that these awards were created to acknowledge the ongoing efforts of individuals and institutions contributing to the region’s development. In this inaugural edition, 20 institutions and individuals from 13 countries were recognized across various fields of international cooperation, including education, science, culture, human rights, and regional development.
Suárez expressed gratitude for the honor and recalled that in his first work report, President Lomelí reaffirmed UNAM’s role as a pillar of public and autonomous education in Mexico. He highlighted the university’s commitment to academic excellence, cutting-edge research, cultural dissemination, and social well-being.
The OEI is the largest cooperation network in Ibero-America, with a presence in 20 Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries.
