Strategic Partnership Between UNAM and Arizona Universities

A delegation of university officials visited UNAM’s Tucson Center for Mexican Studies to advance an agenda aimed at renewing strategic partnerships in research, academic exchange, innovation, and support for the Mexican community.

The delegation was led by Tamara Martínez Ruiz, Secretary of Institutional Development; William Lee Alardín, Coordinator of International Relations and Affairs; Francisco Suárez Güemes, General Director of Cooperation and Internationalization; Rosa Zárate, Director of the School of Nursing and Obstetrics; and Rocío Valdez Labastida, Secretary of Student Community Services at the same school.

During the visit, International Relations Coordinator William Lee explored two key initiatives: the New Health Futures Center, which integrates health research, education, and innovation, and the College of Global Futures, which focuses on sustainability and ethical innovation.

Lee also met with Irazema Coronado, Director of the School of Cross-Border Studies, to discuss critical U.S.-Mexico border issues.

Meanwhile, Zárate and Valdez finalized plans for an extended stay for UNAM nursing students, who will collaborate with University of Arizona departments and assist at consular health offices.

At the same time, Martínez Ruiz and Suárez Güemes visited Biosphere 2, the University of Arizona’s artificial ecosystem, where they agreed to develop joint projects on sustainability and agrovoltaic systems.

The delegation also met with University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella, who reaffirmed the importance of collaboration with UNAM.
