MEXICO MAKES THE TOP 10 IN GLOBAL HAPPINESS RANKING

Mexico ranked tenth out of 147 countries in the 2025 World Happiness Report, released by the United Nations in celebration of the International Day of Happiness, which is observed on March 20 each year.

Roberto Castellanos Cereceda, a professor at the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences (FCPyS), contributed to the report. He highlighted Mexico’s significant rise, moving up 15 spots from the 2024 edition. This marks the first time Mexico has reached the top ten since the report’s inception in 2012.

Castellanos, author of Un gobierno basado en la felicidad (A Government Based on Happiness), explained that the ranking is based on a key question from the Gallup survey: “Imagine a ladder with steps numbered from zero at the bottom, representing the worst possible life, to ten at the top, representing the best possible life. On which step would you say you feel you stand right now?”.

A specialist in subjective well-being, public policy, and democracy, Castellanos noted that Scandinavian countries have consistently led the rankings over the report’s 13 editions. In 2025, Finland remained in first place with a score of 7.736, followed by Denmark (7.521), Iceland (7.515), Sweden (7.345), the Netherlands (7.306), Costa Rica (7.274), Norway (7.262), Israel (7.234), Luxembourg (7.122), and Mexico (6.979).
